Away in a Dumpster

"Tell ’em you’ll put the butt out when [mothers] snuff the kid and not a moment before. Better yet, tell ’em they should snuff themselves, as well as the kid, and do the planet a real favor. Just 'kidding' (heh-heh)."--Disgraced ex-professor Ward Churchill

On December 25, millions of Christians will celebrate the birth of Jesus and unwrap presents under a decorated Christmas tree. Orthodox Christians will celebrate in January.

The Bible says that Jesus' poor parents wrapped their baby boy in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger. In spite of their poverty, Jesus' parents wanted him. He was a gift--their beautiful, precious baby--not a burden.

According to the Book of Luke, Chapter 1, verses 26-38, an angel came to Mary and told her that her child was the son of God. This event is called the Annunciation. [See the discussion and art. See also the story of Leonardo Da Vinci's painting of the Annunciation.]

I thought of the little girl Caylee Anthony whose remains were found wrapped in a plastic bag along a Florida road. I thought of JonBenet Ramsey who was murdered in the wee-hours of December 26, on Mao's birthday.

Today I read a really sad story (below) in Novosti (12-14-08) that is in the news all over Russia. In Moscow, they found the bodies of six infants wrapped in black plastic bags and lying in a dumpster.

The tiny bodies are believed to be pre-term babies of 4-7 months who were illegally aborted at home.

The Catholic News Service (12-08) reports that in the Russian city of Novorossiysk they are having a “week without abortion.” During that week, doctors will only perform abortions that are absolutely necessary. The campaign coincides with the Russian Day of Motherhood, scheduled annually for the last Sunday of November. About 70 percent of pregnancies end in abortion in Russia. In 2004 there were reportedly 100,000 more abortions than births.

At Christmas perhaps we should all think what we can do to uplift women so they can see that the unborn children curled up inside their bodies are beautiful miracles, too. Here is another video of Away in a Manger.

Here is a site that has Hans Christian Anderson's New Year's story about "The Little Match Girl" which reminds us to remember the suffering of unloved, abandoned children. You can read and listen to this story. Click on the audio at the bottom. Here are some more Christmas stories from Trans-Pacific Radio.

Perhaps later I will translate "Thrown Away in a Dumpster," but probably you get the picture. Who were those gifts from God that were thrown away unopened? Perhaps God was sending some Russian mother a brilliant scientist who would have found a cure for AIDS or cancer. Perhaps he was sending her a great Russian musician, artist, dancer, or writer. Perhaps he was sending her a kind, patient teacher, a loving mother, or a hard-working father.
