Climate Change Expert Dr. John Abraham Responds to Lord Monckton's Temper Tantrum

A blog called Skeptical Science has a guest post written by Dr. John Abraham titled "Abraham reply to Monckton" (6-6-10):

Dear Mr. Monckton,

Thank you for taking the time to comment on my presentation. I encourage people to view both of our arguments and make their own conclusions. I stand by my work and welcome judgment by the public and the scientific community. My intention as a professional scientist is to help provide a public disclosure of your scientific methods. I continue to believe that your work seriously misrepresents the science upon which you rely. [See the full text at Climate Skeptic.]

The title of Lord Monckton's essay---"Climate: The Extremists Join the Dabate at Last!"---claims that "extremists" (AKA scientists) are "joining the debate" about global warming. In fact, the glib Lord Monckton does not debate climate scientists; he mischaracterizes their research. Real scientists have been debating the science of global warming for many years.

In a bigoted attempt to tar Dr. Abraham's scientific credentials with the brush of religious fundamentalism, Lord Monckton refers derisively to Dr. Abraham as "a mere Bible college lecturer" and desparages the University of St. Thomas---the Roman Catholic university in St. Paul Minnesota where Dr. Abraham is a tenured associate professor---as a "Bible college." I suspect that a fundamentalist "Bible college" that teaches creationism is probably more likely to be in the denialist camp with Lord Monckton, although this may be unfair to Bible colleges. I don't agree with fundamentalists on the issue of evolution, but fundamentalist Christians are good people who donate a lot of money to help the less fortunate. Their churches are often exciting, warm spiritual and social centers for their communities.

It seems to me that fundamentalists give too much credence to the atheist view that evolution somehow "proves" there is no God; but when I read about the marvels of science, and when I visit the NASA site and see their incredible photos of the cosmos, I really feel that I am in the presence of an all-powerful God. I always think of the Thanksgiving hymn "For the Beauty of the Earth" when I visit NASA and look at their photos:

For the beauty of the earth, for the glory of the skies, For the love which from our birth, over and around us lies. Lord of all, to Thee we raise, this our hymn of grateful praise."---"For the Beauty of the Earth" by Folliott S. Pierpoint

It seems to me that our great scientists are revealing to us all of His wonders, just like the prophets in the Bible. Without the prophetic voices of our great scientists, how would we know how to be good stewards of the earth God gave us? Sadly, fundamentalist Christians are not so comfortable with some of the discoveries of modern science, which I feel reveal the stupendous beauty and greatness of God's creation.

The Vatican, however, supports the science of global warming and wants the U.N. to address this problem. The Bible calls on Christians to be "stewards of the earth," and the Lord God has sent us prophets---climate scientists---to help us learn how to be good stewards.

Lord Monckton has sent our people a big dose of his divisive, anti-religious bigotry. His snide allusions to "extremists" and to Dr. Abraham's "Bible college" remind me of the propaganda published by the Bolshevik Society of the Godless, who used to depict religious people as backward "extremists and fanatics" and the "scientific" Marxist-Leninists as progressive.

Lord Monckton spreads pseudo-scientific denialist propaganda just like the Soviets used to spread the crackpot "science" of Marxism-Leninism. The Russians even promote his denialist perspective on Russia Today (RT), a Russian network that also features lunatics, conspiracists, and haters such as Alex Jones and the 9-11 Truthers. Much of the popular Russian media---which is often owned by powerful gas and oil monopolies---spreads denialist propaganda, sometimes right out of the mouth of Lord Monckton.

Russia's great scientists, however, are not pseudo-scientific charlatans. In 1987, for example, the brave Russian patriot and physicist Dr. Roald Sagdeev openly distanced the Soviet Academy of Sciences from the destructive KGB canard that "crafty" American scientists plotting away in the Pentagon had invented the AIDS virus as an instrument of genocide. Dr. Sagdeev, a member of both the American and Russian Academies of Science, has signed the open letter in defense of persecuted climate scientists such as Phil Jones and Michael Mann.

Lord Monckton reminds me a lot of that infamous Colorado charlatan and fabricator, the discredited ex-professor Ward Churchill. He also fabricated his research and mischaracterized his sources until American scholars exposed him.

It is laughable for Lord Haw Haw to threaten retribution just because a tenured American professor has exposed him as a ridiculous, dishonest phoney who mischaracterizes the research of real scientists:

I have already initiated the process of having Abraham hauled up before whatever academic panel his Bible College can muster, to answer disciplinary charges of wilful academic dishonesty amounting to gross professional misconduct unbecoming a member of his profession.

The mendacious Lord Monckton is a ridiculous, arrogant, petty propagandist!
