Extremists Threaten Scientists Who Research Global Warming

According to the British media, the FBI is investigating e-mailed death threats that have been made against scientists who support the theory of anthropogenic global warming. [See also the Guardian (12-8-09).]

According to media reports, Tomsk hackers guided by the Russian FSB may have orchestrated the "Climategate" scandal in order to discredit scientists affiliated with the East Anglia Climate Research Unit (CRU). In response, the FSB is claiming that the Chinese orchestrated the scandal.

The Soviet-era KGB often mounted campaigns to discredit scientists in the U.S.S.R. and sometimes even in America. KGB chief Primakov once actually admitted that KGB operatives orchestrated a campaign of slander against U.S. Army scientists. As Izvestia (3-19-92) reported:

[KGB Chief Primakov] mentioned the well known articles printed a few years ago in our central newspapers about AIDS supposedly originating from secret Pentagon laboratories. According to Yevgeni Primakov, the articles exposing US scientists' 'crafty' plots were fabricated in KGB offices.

According to the Guardian (12-8-09):

Two of the scientists involved in "Climategate" – the e-mail hacking incident at the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia, UK – have been emailed death threats since the contents of their private e-mails were leaked to the world. No further information can be revealed about these particular threats at present because they are currently under investigation with the FBI in the United States.

Many other CRU scientists and their colleagues have received torrents of abusive and threatening e-mails since the leaks first began in mid-November 2009. Tom Wigley, previous Director of CRU and now at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), Boulder, US, has been horrified by the e-mails he and other colleagues have received.

This isn't Russia, where thugs and gangsters can intimidate scientists and intellectuals with impunity. Anyway, the criminals would have to purge most of the climate scientists in the U.S., because most of them believe that anthropological global warming is happening.

Here is the official statement of the American Meteorological Society on climate change and global warming. [pdf version]
